Audi offers the A4 in Saloon and Avant (estate) body styles, the latter being a perfect choice for families. The Allroad version adds some off-roading ability thanks to its higher road clearance.
The Saloon offers 480 litres of boot space, which matches the BMW 3 Series. The Avant increases this to 495 litres with the rear seats in place and a class-leading 1495 litres with them folded flat. The Avant is the slightly more family friendly offering thanks to its larger boot and full-sized rear hatch.
If low running costs are a priority, then look no further than the entry-level diesel engines. The base 136hp 2.0-litre diesel promises 60.1mpg, although we would opt for the more powerful 163- or 204hp variants as they are only marginally less efficient at 58.9mpg and 54.3mpg respectively.
The petrol range offers between 46.3 and 34.9mpg. For those that still prefer to change their own gears, the 150hp front-wheel-drive models have the option of a 6-speed manual transmission, which is uncharacteristically more efficient than the 7-speed automatic (46.3mpg versus 45.6mpg).
