The NEXO is dripping with rarity value. With hydrogen infrastructure in its infancy, there aren’t many about. But for those with a filling station around the corner, the NEXO makes a lot of sense. There’s no worrying about range or charging and it won’t take 6 hours to refill the thing.
But technology aside, this is still a very nice car. The cabin is classier than you might expect, and there’s plenty of interior space to play with. There’s more to the NEXO than just clever propulsion systems.
The NEXO has a spacious cabin that will carry 4 adults in comfort. There’s plenty of space for those in the front, while rear passengers will also be comfortable. Very tall passengers might find headroom a little tight, but they won’t be short of legroom.
Kids will have more than enough space in the back, which should make longer journeys more pleasant. Further back, the NEXO has a roomy 461-litre boot. That’s big enough to carry shopping, luggage or golf clubs with ease. That said, some family SUVs such as the SEAT Ateca are more spacious inside. If you find yourself in need of some extra room, you can always fold down the back seats.
Hydrogen prices are generally similar to petrol and diesel rates, but hydrogen cars aren’t quite as efficient. With a 414-mile range between fill-ups, the NEXO is likely to match petrol cars.
However, there’s less fossil fuel involvement and with a refill taking around 5 minutes, the NEXO is at least convenient. Hydrogen fuel stations are limited at present and though that situation will improve, it’s worth bearing in mind.
Perhaps more importantly, the Hyundai emits nothing but water from its propulsion system. That means it falls into the cheapest 1% company-car tax rate for 2021/22. The tax advantages of an electric car and the flexibility of a petrol- or diesel-powered vehicle mix into one powerful combination in the NEXO.
The NEXO is only available as a 5-door SUV. It’s deceptively large, sitting comfortably among the world’s mid sized family SUVs.

There’s only 1 version of the NEXO, but it has everything you need. The Premium SE trim gets you 19-inch alloy wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen navigation system. The Hyundai also includes 2-zone climate control, wireless charging and a 360-degree parking camera that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the car and its surroundings.
With the hydrogen powertrain under the bonnet, the NEXO is short of direct rivals. Fuel-cell cars are few and far between in the UK market, so the key alternative is the Toyota Mirai – a 4-door saloon. Naturally, the NEXO is a very different proposition, more akin to conventional SUVs such as the Mazda CX-5, Ford Kuga and Volkswagen Tiguan. But with better environmental credentials, that isn’t such a fair comparison. Electric SUVs including the MG ZS EV and Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 are some eco-friendly, tax-efficient alternatives.
Hyundai has a solid reputation for reliability, so the NEXO should prove dependable. But because it uses new, cutting-edge technology, you’ll find more reassurance in the standard warranty.
The NEXO has a 461-litre boot, which is plenty for most people. It’s much more than you get in a VW Golf or Ford Focus, but slightly less than you find in a SEAT Ateca. You can shove your shopping, holiday luggage or golf clubs in there without a problem.
