The Defender’s history goes back to the late 1940s and the original Land Rover. That design evolved gradually over the decades and was given the Defender name in the 1990s. But this Defender, revealed in 2019, is a radical reinvention, with nothing carried over from the original.
It more than lives up to the name, however, being a fantastic off-roader that drives very well on the road and is every inch a modern, luxurious SUV. You can get lease deals on a Defender in 3- (called the 90) or 5-door (called the 110) form, and with up to 7 seats in the cabin. Because of the upright, boxy styling of the Defender, you get loads of head- and legroom. As a result, 3 adults will have no space issues in the back of the 110. It’s not quite as spacious for the legs in the back of the shorter 90, but it’s not bad.
You can also add a 3rd row of seats to the 110 to accommodate up to 7, although legroom is limited compared to some 7-seat rivals, such as the BMW X7.
The boot, at 297 litres in the 90, is competitive. You can fold the rear seats down should you need to carry larger items. The boot is accessed through a side-opening door, which can prove to be problematic in certain situations if you park too close to an object located behind the Defender.
There are loads of storage spaces around the cabin, with big door pockets and a massive cubby hole between the front seats.
If you want the best fuel economy then look at the plug-in hybrid model. Keep the battery charged and do mostly journeys of around 30 miles or less, and you’ll keep fuel bills to a minimum.
All three diesel engines promise a fuel economy of up to 32.8mpg. The P400 petrol engine has more power than the P300, but its mild-hybrid technology promises up to 25.7mpg.
The 3-door Defender sits at 4.5 metres long. It’s more agile than the 110, both on- and off-road, but sacrifices practicality.
The 110 is considerably longer, at more than 5 metres, and is the best choice if you want to use the rear seats regularly or need decent boot space. It also comes with the option of 7 seats.
The Defender V8 models come with the most powerful engine. The 5.0-litre V8 has 525hp, which gives it a 0-62mph time of 5.2 seconds

The basic spec list for the Defender includes alloy wheels and LED lights, as well as heated front seats, push-button start and the twin touchscreen infotainment system.
With its breadth of skills and premium badge, the Defender has many rivals. The most obvious is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which has similar off-road skills and a strong heritage. The Jeep Wrangler is similarly strong on rugged terrain, as is the Toyota Land Cruiser, but both lack premium appeal.
For 7-seat luxury, look towards the BMW X5 or X7, Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7, while 5-seat premium rivals include the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. The Defender does a lot of things well and could be considered as an alternative to all manner of SUVs.
