How Does The Subaru Forester Drive?
While previous versions of the Subaru Forester often impressed more off-road than they did on, the latest generation is much more civilised than before – while not losing any of the model’s famed rough-road capability.
Four-wheel drive and Subaru’s ‘Lineartronic’ automatic gearbox are standard across the range, with power coming from a 2.0-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology to improve its efficiency.
Having formerly sat on its own mechanical platform, the Forester now uses the same underpinnings as the rest of the Subaru range. As a result, it now feels closer to a conventional family car in how it steers, goes around corners and deals with bumps.
It’s not the swiftest family SUV you can lease, though – 0-62mph takes nearly 12 seconds. The Forester is more about offering plenty of grunt at low speed to help with towing a trailer or caravan, or dealing with rough or muddy surfaces.
The Forester is a very practical choice for family motoring. Its high roofline ensures copious amounts of space for occupants in the front and rear, while wide-opening doors and large windows make it both easy to get in and out of, and pleasant to travel in once you’re on board.
Regarding boot capacity, the Forester can accommodate 520 litres of luggage with all seats in place – or a massive 1779 litres when they’re folded down. Braked towing capacity is strong, too – the Forester can haul 1870kg of caravan or trailer.
This is an area where the Forester comes up short a bit. Despite the presence of mild-hybrid technology on the latest model, this is still a large, 4-wheel-drive, petrol-engined car with an automatic gearbox – which is not a great combination if you’re looking for good fuel economy.
Approaching 35mpg is about the best you’ll get out of it, but towing, off-road driving or high-speed cruising on the motorway will all result in a lower figure.
