Launched a year before the first Ford Fiesta, these vehicles have been locked in battle for supermini supremacy ever since. Now, almost half a century later and having undergone more than a few updates along the way, the 6th-generation VW Polo remains a smart and popular choice to lease today. Take a look through our top Volkswagen car leasing deals today to find the perfect model for you.

Volkswagen Polo Top Features

Comfortable and refined.

Spacious for a small car.

Plenty of ‘big car’ luxuries.

  • You’re never short of space inside the Polo. Even the back seats offer reasonable room for taller grown-ups. There’s also plenty of cabin storage for a car of this size, with a large cubby hole beneath the dashboard, as well as generously sized door bins front and rear.

It’s a similar story with the boot space. At 351 litres, the Polo holds usefully more than most of its rivals – the Ford Fiesta, included. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat and a height-adjustable boot floor add further practicality, with 1125 litres of capacity on offer if you tuck away the back seats.

  • Almost all of the Polo range is covered by a series of 3-cylinder petrol engines. These vary in power output, but they all deliver around 50mpg and around 120g/km of CO2. This places the Polo solidly in the middle of its class, toe-to-toe with rivals such as the Ford Fiesta and the Vauxhall Corsa.

There’s no hybrid or electric option yet, and no diesel version in the UK either. At the other end of the scale, there’s the Polo GTI that gets a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, which still returns a respectable 39.8- to 41.5mpg.

Volkswagen Polo Leasing Models

All Polos now come in 5-door hatchback form. The majority come with a choice of manual or automatic transmission – the only exceptions being the 1.0-litre Evo models, which are manual only, and the GTI that’s only available with the DSG.

High Performance Models

Volkswagen Polo GTI

On paper, the Polo GTI offers virtually identical performance to the class-leading Fiesta ST. In reality, it’s a slightly different take on the hot-hatch recipe, with a better ride and greater refinement than the Ford. That makes the Polo GTI an easier car to live with day-to-day, but the trade-off is that it doesn’t feel quite as exciting to drive.

Volkswagen Polo GTI+

This is a trim spec, which brings added equipment, but retains the same performance and dynamics as the standard GTI.

Colours And Interiors

The Polo is available in 8 stylish colours with various interior choices for those who like to customise, check out our Polo colour guide for details.

Trim Levels

Match Beats United Active SEL R-Line GTI GTI+

Entry level Match models come with an 8-inch colour touchscreen display, DAB radio and air conditioning as standard. A digital instrument cluster is optional on most models, as is a panoramic sunroof, active cruise control and Park Assist.

The Volkswagen Polo Vs Competitors

The Polo majors on quality, technology and comfort. Its refinement and equipment levels are particularly good for a car of this size, as is the ride quality. It’s a competent car to drive too.

Not surprisingly, the Polo is closest in character to its Volkswagen Group stablemates, the SEAT Ibiza and the Skoda Fabia. But the same comparisons apply here to a certain extent too, with the Polo arguably the more polished performer overall, while the Ibiza feels noticeably sharper to drive.

We've also compared the Polo with the 208, another incredibly popular supermini, read our dedicated article to see which won.

  • In a recent independent reliability survey, the Polo beat the Ford Fiesta and is considered to be a widely reliable car.

  • One of the most spacious cars in its class, the Polo offers a generous 351 litres of boot space with the rear seats up and 1125 litres with them folded away. Bear in mind the GTI loses some luggage capacity at the back, its comparable figures reading 305-1079 litres. This is because its bigger 2.0-litre engine up front means the battery has to be relocated beneath the boot floor, eating into the cargo area.

  • The Volkswagen Polo is available to lease in a broad range of trim specs, from entry-level Match to the range-topping GTI+.

  • Yes, all models have front and rear parking sensors. Park Assist and a rear-view camera are optional on most grades.

  • The Polo boasts one of the largest boot volumes in its class, along with an impressive amount of passenger space for a small hatchback.

  • The Volkswagen Polo is a popular leasing option because it’s a consummate all-rounder that combines small-car running costs with big-car comfort.

  • Leasing a VW Polo with Vanarama is the smartest way to upgrade your car. We will give you the best price, guaranteed, while there’s also no hidden fees. You can add on servicing and maintenance packages too, fully customising your lease contract to suit your needs. We’re rated Excellent on Trustpilot and our team of experts can help you find your ideal VW car leasing deal today.
