The S90 is a refined, comfortable car that’ll cruise with the best of them. Volvo's aim is to make your journey as easy and relaxing as possible. All models come with plenty of tech, including adaptive cruise control and lane assist features, which take control of braking and accelerating on the motorway. The suspension is set up to make things nice and smooth. On B-roads, the S90 feels confident through the bends. All S90s have the same plug-in hybrid powertrain, which combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and powers all 4 wheels. You can travel up to 40 miles on electric power alone, which is quiet and nippy under acceleration. Put your foot down and the petrol engine kicks in, giving you a combined 390hp. That makes for serious straight-line performance when you want it.

The S90 is one of the most spacious cars of its type, with more room in the back than the Audi A6 or the BMW 5 Series.

The boot isn’t quite as big, though. At 461 litres it’s smaller than most of its rivals, although that’s in part due to the space needed for the S90’s hybrid components. Some of the plug-in rivals also lose boot space to batteries.

If you need more room, the rear seats fold down, in a 60/40 split. You’ll get a flat load space with the seats down.

There is also a big glovebox, large door pockets, and a decent-sized covered tray between the front seats.
The S90’s plug-in hybrid system means that fuel economy can be excellent, although you’ll have to use it in a particular way to make the best savings. Keep the battery charged, either through a home wallbox or a public charger, and keep your journeys short, and a tank of fuel could last months.

Once the battery runs out, power will come from the petrol engine, with the S90 returning up to 148.7mpg.
